How to Clean iPhone Speakers: A Complete Guide for Every Model

Published on May 10, 2026 | By Fix My Speaker Apple Experts

The iPhone is a masterpiece of engineering, but even the best hardware can't stay clean forever. If your music sounds thin or your callers sound like they're in a tunnel, it's time for a deep clean.

Understanding the iPhone Speaker Layout

Most modern iPhones (iPhone 7 through iPhone 15) have two primary speakers:

  • Bottom Speaker: Located to the right of the charging port (the holes on the left are actually microphones).
  • Ear Speaker: Located at the top of the screen in the notch or "Dynamic Island."

Method 1: The Sound Wave Method (Safest)

Apple itself uses sound-based water ejection on the Apple Watch. You can do the same for your iPhone. This method is the safest because it doesn't involve touching the delicate mesh grills.

Use our iPhone Speaker Cleaner to play high-frequency tones. This vibrates the mesh and "shakes" out any loose debris or moisture.

Method 2: Soft Brushing

If you have visible gunk or pocket lint, you'll need a physical tool. Do not use a toothpick or pin.

  1. Find a toothbrush with "Super Soft" or "Extra Soft" bristles.
  2. Hold your iPhone with the speaker facing downwards.
  3. Gently sweep the brush across the grill holes. The downward angle ensures the dust falls out rather than deeper in.

Method 3: Blue-Tack or Cleaning Putty

For fine dust that a brush can't grab, use a small piece of electronics cleaning putty (like Blue-Tack). Press it very lightly against the grill and pull it away. You'll see the dust and lint stick to the putty.

What to Avoid

❌ Compressed Air: High-pressure air can rupture the internal waterproof seals or damage the speaker diaphragm.
❌ Liquids: Never use rubbing alcohol or water directly on the speaker grills.
❌ Sharp Objects: One slip with a needle can mean a $300 screen replacement bill.

Maintenance Tip

Clean your speakers once every two weeks to prevent buildup. A quick 1-minute sound ejection cycle is usually all it takes to keep your audio sounding like new.
